App Configuration
Process of remotely configuring app settings through MDM via Managed App Configuration dictionaries. Allows pre-configuring server URLs, user settings, etc.
What to Know
App Configuration eliminates the need for end users to manually configure enterprise apps with corporate settings, server endpoints, authentication parameters, or feature toggles. This dramatically reduces help desk tickets, onboarding time, and user error while ensuring every device is consistently configured according to organizational policy. Without it, admins must either rely on users to correctly enter complex settings or manually configure every device in person.
For security-conscious organizations, App Configuration also prevents sensitive configuration data from being exposed through other distribution channels. Settings are delivered directly from the MDM server to the app’s secure container, ensuring credentials, API keys, or internal server URLs never pass through email, wikis, or chat systems where they might be intercepted or leaked.
Common Scenarios
Enterprise IT: Pre-configure VPN clients with server addresses and authentication methods, set default Microsoft 365 tenants, configure email clients with Exchange autodiscover URLs, or customize productivity apps with internal SharePoint/OneDrive paths without requiring users to know or enter these details.
MSP: Deploy standardized configurations across multiple client organizations by maintaining separate configuration dictionaries per client. Common use cases include remote monitoring tools (RMM agents), communication apps (Slack/Teams channels), and documentation systems (ConnectWise URLs) that vary per client but must be consistently configured across each client’s fleet.
Education: Automatically configure classroom apps like Google Classroom, Canvas, or Schoology with district-specific settings. Lock down testing apps with exam-specific parameters or configure content filtering apps with age-appropriate restrictions without requiring teacher or student intervention.
In Addigy
Addigy supports Managed App Configuration through its Apple Apps (formerly VPP) interface and Custom Profile deployment. Admins can deploy app configurations either by selecting a VPP-managed app and filling out the configuration schema provided by the app developer, or by manually crafting a configuration dictionary in a Custom MDM Profile for apps that support it. Addigy automatically delivers configuration changes to devices whenever the policy is updated, ensuring configurations remain current without requiring app reinstallation.
