Safe Mode

Recovery & Troubleshooting

A special macOS startup mode that loads only essential system extensions and performs directory checks, used for troubleshooting software conflicts and startup issues.

What to Know

Safe Mode helps isolate whether Mac issues are caused by third-party software, damaged caches, or corrupted system files. By loading only Apple software and performing automatic directory repairs, Safe Mode enables Macs with severe software issues to boot successfully and allows IT to identify problematic extensions or apps. This diagnostic capability is essential for troubleshooting kernel panics, boot failures, and persistent crashes without immediately resorting to full OS reinstalls.

Common Scenarios

Enterprise IT: Corporate IT guides users through Safe Mode when Macs won’t boot normally or exhibit persistent crashes. If the Mac works correctly in Safe Mode, IT knows the issue involves third-party software or startup items that can be removed without full OS reinstall.

MSP: MSPs use Safe Mode to diagnose client Mac boot and stability issues remotely, determining if problems stem from third-party software versus system corruption. This helps scope repair work and avoid unnecessary full wipes when removing problematic software will suffice.

Education: School IT boots lab Macs into Safe Mode when they exhibit startup issues or persistent crashes, using it as a diagnostic tool to determine if the problem is caused by problematic student-installed apps or actual system corruption requiring reimaging.

In Addigy

While Safe Mode disables many third-party processes including some MDM functions, Addigy admins can instruct users to boot into Safe Mode for troubleshooting and then restart normally. Once back in normal mode, Addigy management resumes and any pending policies or apps are applied.
