Recovery Mode

Recovery & Troubleshooting

A state where an iOS or iPadOS device connects to iTunes/Finder for restoration when the device cannot boot normally. Less invasive than DFU mode.

What to Know

Recovery Mode provides a standard method for restoring iOS and iPads experiencing boot failures or severe software corruption without resorting to the deeper DFU Mode. It allows devices to communicate with iTunes/Finder or Apple Configurator for firmware updates and system restoration while maintaining some boot loader functionality. Recovery Mode is the appropriate first attempt at device recovery before escalating to DFU Mode, and can resolve most software-related boot failures.

Common Scenarios

Enterprise IT: Corporate IT guides users through Recovery Mode restoration when company iPhones won’t boot after failed updates or configuration issues. This restores devices to working condition while maintaining the ability to restore from backup, minimizing data loss and user disruption.

MSP: MSPs use Recovery Mode to restore client iPhones experiencing boot loops or update failures. It’s the standard recovery method that resolves most issues without requiring the more aggressive DFU Mode approach.

Education: School IT uses Recovery Mode to restore student iPads that won’t boot after failed updates or student tampering. This recovers devices quickly without the complexity of DFU Mode procedures.

In Addigy

While Recovery Mode operates outside MDM, devices enrolled in Automated Device Enrollment automatically re-enter Addigy’s enrollment after Recovery Mode restoration completes. Addigy’s Return to Service then ensures devices receive all policies and apps automatically.
