Managed

Device States

A general term indicating a device is under MDM control and receiving management policies and configurations.

What to Know

Managed status enables IT to enforce security policies, deploy apps and updates, monitor compliance, and respond to security incidents remotely. Managed devices benefit from centralized configuration, reduced support burden through automation, and improved security posture through enforced encryption, passcodes, and restrictions. Organizations with unmanaged devices face increased risk of data breaches, compliance violations, and inconsistent user experiences.

Common Scenarios

Enterprise IT: Corporate-owned devices are managed from day one through ADE or manual enrollment. IT relies on managed status to deploy corporate Wi-Fi, VPN, email configurations, and required security tools. Managed devices can be inventoried for compliance audits and remotely locked or wiped if lost or stolen.

MSP: Client SLAs typically specify which devices are managed and at what tier of service. MSPs track managed device counts for billing and ensure devices receive timely updates, backups, and security patches. Devices transitioning from unmanaged to managed status often require initial configuration, software removal, and policy enforcement.

Education: Student and staff devices are managed to enforce acceptable use policies, deploy educational apps, and filter content. Managed status allows schools to support devices remotely, reducing the need for students to visit IT help desks and ensuring consistent classroom readiness.

In Addigy

Addigy considers a device “managed” once it is enrolled and checking in successfully. The Devices page displays managed devices alongside their applied policies, installed apps, and compliance status. Admins can filter by managed vs. unmanaged status and run bulk actions (installs, updates, commands) exclusively on managed devices.
