ADE-Enrolled

Device States

A device state indicating the device was enrolled through Apple’s Automated Device Enrollment program, providing enhanced management capabilities and mandatory enrollment.

What to Know

The ADE-enrolled state signifies that a device is permanently bound to an organization’s MDM infrastructure through Apple Business Manager or Apple School Manager. This enrollment cannot be removed by users without administrator approval, ensuring continuous management even if the device is erased or reset. ADE-enrolled devices are automatically supervised, unlocking advanced management features like single app mode, AirPlay restrictions, and granular control over system features. This persistent management is essential for maintaining security and compliance across corporate-owned devices.

Organizations can immediately identify ADE-enrolled devices in their inventory and apply appropriate policies based on this trusted enrollment state. The ADE-enrolled designation guarantees the device went through proper organizational onboarding rather than manual user enrollment, providing audit trail and compliance documentation for device provenance and ownership verification.

Common Scenarios

Enterprise IT: IT maintains an inventory of all ADE-enrolled devices, distinguishing them from manually enrolled or BYOD devices. Corporate security policies requiring supervised management are only deployed to ADE-enrolled devices. When devices are reported lost, IT verifies ADE enrollment status to confirm the device will automatically re-enroll if someone attempts to erase and reactivate it, preventing unauthorized use.

MSP: MSPs track which client devices are ADE-enrolled versus manually enrolled, using this state to determine appropriate management strategies. ADE-enrolled devices receive aggressive management policies and security configurations, while manually enrolled devices receive lighter-touch policies. During client offboarding, the MSP releases ADE-enrolled devices from Apple Business Manager to transfer ownership.

Education: Schools identify ADE-enrolled iPads for use in standardized testing or assessments requiring single app mode and strict restrictions. Only ADE-enrolled devices are configured for shared iPad scenarios where multiple students use the same device. The ADE-enrolled state ensures devices remain under school management even if students reset them at home.

In Addigy

Addigy clearly displays ADE enrollment status in device details and inventory views, allowing you to filter and report on ADE-enrolled devices separately from manually enrolled ones. Smart groups can automatically assign policies based on ADE enrollment state, ensuring only properly enrolled devices receive supervised-only restrictions. Addigy’s enrollment dashboard tracks ADE enrollment success rates, showing which assigned devices have completed enrollment and which are pending.

When viewing a device in Addigy, the enrollment method is prominently displayed, indicating whether it came through ADE or manual enrollment. This helps admins quickly understand what management capabilities are available for each device and troubleshoot enrollment issues by verifying expected enrollment state matches actual state.
