Remote Lock

Recovery & Troubleshooting

An MDM capability to remotely lock a device and optionally display a custom message, preventing unauthorized access while the device is lost or pending administrative action.

What to Know

Remote Lock provides immediate security response when devices are lost, stolen, or in the possession of unauthorized users. Unlike waiting for users to manually lock their devices or hoping passwords prevent access, Remote Lock ensures devices are immediately secured regardless of user action or cooperation. The ability to display custom messages transforms locked devices into recovery tools by showing contact information for device return, significantly improving recovery rates.

Common Scenarios

Enterprise IT: Corporate IT issues Remote Lock commands immediately when employees report lost or stolen devices, preventing unauthorized access to corporate email, files, and applications. The lock screen message displays IT contact information to facilitate device return.

MSP: MSPs use Remote Lock to secure client devices when employees are terminated or devices are reported missing. This ensures client data remains protected while recovery attempts are made, and provides documentation of security response for compliance purposes.

Education: Schools use Remote Lock on student iPads and MacBooks reported missing or stolen, displaying the school IT contact number to encourage device return. Combined with location tracking in Lost Mode, this helps recover valuable educational technology.

In Addigy

Addigy supports Remote Lock through device actions, allowing admins to lock devices and set custom lock screen messages with a single click. The lock is enforced immediately on devices with network connectivity, and is queued for offline devices to execute once they reconnect.
