Corporate-Owned

Device States

A device ownership classification indicating the device is purchased and owned by the organization, allowing for full management capabilities.

What to Know

Corporate ownership grants IT the legal and technical authority to fully control the device, including the ability to monitor usage, enforce restrictions, remotely wipe all data, and prevent users from removing management. Corporate-owned devices enrolled through ADE automatically become supervised, unlocking over 100 additional restrictions and capabilities unavailable on personal devices. Ownership designation also affects user expectations around privacy — corporate-owned devices are subject to organizational policies without requiring user consent for management actions.

Common Scenarios

Enterprise IT: All company-purchased hardware should be added to ABM and enrolled as corporate-owned through ADE. This ensures full supervision, prevents profile removal, and allows IT to enforce compliance requirements for regulated industries. Corporate-owned devices are typically issued to employees who agree to acceptable use policies that permit monitoring and remote management.

MSP: MSPs should establish clear asset ownership records with clients and ensure corporate-owned devices are properly enrolled in ABM. When clients acquire hardware outside of authorized channels, MSPs need to determine whether devices can be added to ABM retroactively or require re-enrollment through Apple Configurator to achieve supervised status.

Education: School-owned devices (whether purchased or leased) are classified as corporate-owned and enrolled through ASM. This enables supervision, Shared iPad, and the full range of restrictions needed for classroom management and student safety. Schools typically retain ownership even when devices are assigned to specific students for the academic year.

In Addigy

Addigy automatically detects ownership type based on enrollment method (ADE-enrolled devices are corporate-owned). Admins can filter devices by ownership in Smart Groups to apply different policy sets — stricter controls for corporate-owned devices, lighter-touch management for personal BYOD devices. Ownership type is displayed in each device’s details page.
